An Unforgettable Concert...

Most of us have had the experience of being held in thrall by a skilled and sensitive pianist, bringing to life a massive grand piano, on a concert stage. Is it not only size however, which distinguishes a concert piano from a conventional home piano, and, in fact, a concert piano needn't always be so large?

What is a Concert Piano?

As opposed to most conventional home pianos, concert instruments, the ones you see on a stage, will always be from the small category of hand-crafted instruments, and they will always be grand, not upright pianos. The very best hand-crafters of "performance" grand pianos, are from Europe, primarily Germany. The painstaking hand-building of pianos will mean these makers can sometimes produce only a few hundred instruments a year, and sadly that means in many professional venues we rarely hear the best, for they just can't produce enough pianos to ensure traveling performers will have an instrument in all the cities they visit. Concert piano are big, usually 9 feet long, because they usually have to fill a large hall with sound. In a home or chamber situation they may be too loud and when this large the bass sound may overwhelm the treble. It is also a mistake to confuse loudness with musicality; the piano Mozart performed on would sound diminutive when compared with most home pianos.

Selecting a Concert Piano, for a Performance Centre, Studio, or Home.

Larger halls need larger pianos. As a general rule of thumb, the bigger the piano, the greater the tone potential. Most makers and performers agree the perfect size for a piano is 7 feet long, (a semi-concert piano), where there is better balance between the bass and treble; this size is most common in good recording studios. The best way to enjoy concert quality sound in your home is to buy a hand-crafted European piano. for far less money than an exotic car which won't be around in 10 years, you can invest in a wonderful instrument your family can enjoy for generations, and it needn't be 7 feet long; a grand piano 51/2 to 6 feet long in a home setting will produce beautiful sound.
